María Antonieta Gamarra, national director of Health Surveillance, pointed out that hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin are effective against the coronavirus, since they contribute to shorten the hospitalization times of the infected, although they should only be accessed under medical prescription. She underscored this after self-medication against COVID-19 has increased significantly.
“Hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin have long been available, but they are for use prescribed by the doctor on the patient with coronavirus. They are based on various protocols in other countries, ”Gamarra said in contact with La Unión, indicating that these two drugs, for oral use, are special for the treatment of people who are isolated at home.
In that order, he asserted that both hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin shorten hospitalization periods, exerting an effect on viral replication. “Their use must be under medical supervision because their effectiveness in terms of prevention and subsequent effects has not yet been proven,” she stated, noting that for that reason they are sold only by prescription.
He also spoke about remdisivir, which is an injectable exclusively for hospitalized coronavirus patients.
Gamarra regretted that self-medication around COVID-19 has notably increased, for which the Ministry of Health has launched a campaign against it.
